Structuring Lessons with Thought-Provoking Questions

EDI questioning begins with foundational comprehension checks, such as “Read the objective” or “What’s our topic?” It then transitions to higher-order analysis questions like “Why is this evidence reliable?” and “How does this support the author’s point of view?” This progression encourages critical thinking by challenging students to engage more deeply at each step.
Equally important is the timing and delivery of these questions.
EDI integrates questions at key points in the lesson:
- At the start of Activate Prior Knowledge
- During Concept Development to Checking for Understanding
- Throughout Skill Development/Guided Practice to support learning
- During Independent Practice to assess mastery
- In Periodic Reviews to reinforce key concepts
This scaffolded approach ensures all students can participate and grow. Beginning learners benefit from simple yes/no questions, while advanced students engage with complex analytical prompts. The variety of question formats provides multiple ways for students to demonstrate understanding, creating an inclusive and effective learning environment.
