Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI)® Helps Educators Increase Academic Performance For All Students

Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI)® increases exposure to subject matter from high-order thinking which helps students to transfer the information from their short-term memory into their working, long-term memory.

The results, as reviewed by the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education, show students learn more, in less time, and they retain the information longer.

Joe Ybarra, Lead EDI® Consultant In Australia

Joe Ybarra has been the Lead Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) consultant for Dataworks Educational Research in Australia since 2009. Over the years, he has collaborated extensively with Australian schools across the country, helping educators improve teaching practices and student outcomes. His remarkable effectiveness in training educators and the success of the schools he supports have made him a sought-after consultant. Through word of mouth, Joe is invited to return to Australia three to four times a year to assist schools with EDI implementation.

Joe began his career in education as a researcher for Dataworks Educational Research, focusing on the Cognitive Brain Science of learning. His research delved into how the brain retains information and identified teaching strategies that maximize student engagement and information retention. This foundation has guided Joe’s work in understanding how students learn most effectively.

In addition to his expertise in cognitive science, Joe specializes in aligning lessons, scope and sequence modules with federal and state curriculum standards. His training workshops for teachers incorporate Engagement Strategies that foster active participation and enhance professional learning. However, Joe’s true passion lies in delivering and modeling these strategies directly to students. He has worked with classrooms ranging from students in Pre-Primary to Year 12, demonstrating how EDI can transform teaching and learning at all levels.

With this virtual training program, you or your school can start learning at a time that suits you, eliminating barriers to learning and making high-quality training more accessible.

Many Australian educators have already heard from colleagues about the effectiveness of EDI in the classroom. Now, you have the chance to experience this training without requiring large school budgets or complicated approvals.

We’ve also made the training more affordable so individual teachers can participate. You can choose to fund it yourself, seek reimbursement from your school, or coordinate with your principal to purchase access for your team.

Our training mirrors the strategies we teach for classrooms, maximizing learning and implementation. Through active participation, engagement, and higher-order thinking, we ensure memory retention. Even in our online workshops, we prioritize live engagement and interactions to enhance the learning experience.

Be Prepared For Training

  • You’ll be asked to write your answers on a whiteboard or paper. You’ll need something to write on and something to write with.
  • Be prepared to be engaged; find a room where you can hear and speak without background distractions.
  • You will be called on which will help you to process information. You will experience the engagement norms first-hand as a student would to help you implement the pedagogy with your own instruction style.
  • We’ll be using Zoom for the video and audio; please arrive 10 minutes early to add your name, test your mic, and test your speakers before the training starts.
  • Take short notes. We have you covered for longer, detailed notes. Everyone will be sent a detailed note summary after the training.
