Biography

Silvia is the chief researcher and co-founder of DataWORKS. She served as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent at several schools before applying her knowledge of learning, language, and research to improve education in the classroom.

At the age of 11, her family came to the U.S. from El Salvador, and she entered the Los Angeles school system without being able to speak English. She knows what it means to be an English Learner, and with hard work and discipline, earned her doctorate in education.

After analyzing 2 million student assignments and observing 45,000 teachers, she and her husband John Hollingsworth, identified the Instructional Gap, and pioneered research-based teaching strategies, that culminated in the worldwide use of Explicit Direct Instruction.

She and John are co-authors of two books: Explicit Direct Instruction: The Power of the Well-Crafted, Well-Taught Lesson (2009) and Explicit Direct Instruction for English Learners (2013).
