EDI® Cognitive Strategies Classroom Coaching

A DataWORKS researcher goes into the classroom to observe lessons and to provide feedback to teachers on their use of cognitive strategies that help students learn and remember. Instructional leaders must attend to learn how to do Classroom Coaching to provide support for effective and ongoing implementation.

Why is Cognitive Strategies Classroom Coaching valuable?
The most important factor in student learning is the teacher in front of the classroom. Research has shown that no matter how well intentioned, effective staff development requires extensive monitoring, feedback, and coaching to facilitate effective implementation amongst all teachers. Students don’t benefit from staff development that is not implemented. Cognitive Strategies Classroom Coaching provides this valuable support and increases successful implementation.

How does it work?
The principal schedules teachers for observations and provides this schedule in advance to DataWORKS. The teachers should be teaching the EDI lessons already reviewed during the EDI Lesson Plan Feedback day. The principal (and other administrators) must accompany and be trained to make observations and then continue to observe over additional days until all teachers are observed and provided coaching. This process should be repeated until all teachers are effectively incorporating cognitive strategies (help students learn and remember) into their daily classroom lessons.
