This professional development shows teachers how to prepare strategy-based lessons that allow students to learn more and to learn faster. The training addresses lesson design: Learning Objective, Activate Prior Knowledge, Concept Development, Skill Development, Guided Practice, Lesson Relevance, and Closure. The training addresses how to create student engagement while teaching, as well as how to continually Check for Understanding to measure in real time if students are learning or if re-teaching is needed. Included are 6 strategies to use when students are not successful. The goal is 80-100 percent student success when teaching new grade-level content.

This professional development shows teachers exactly how to modify lessons and classroom instruction to maximize learning for English Learners. Content Area Literacy Workshop
This professional development shows teachers how to support students in learning from text. The training starts with an analysis of the Literacy Standards for history/social science teachers and the Literacy Standards for teachers of science and technical subjects. The training then addresses how to teach Academic and Content vocabulary, and how to advance student learning through domain-specific text, reading complex text, text-based answers, and writing from sources.

Lesson Demonstrations
All training needs follow-up to ensure implementation. Our most effective follow-up is Lesson Demonstrations where a DataWORKS trainer teaches an EDI lesson at participating schools with the local students. Teachers and administrators observe and then, after debriefing, they teach the same lesson 2-3 more times in different classrooms. During the teaching, they receive real-time, in-situation coaching which research shows is the most effective method for supporting implementation.

Lesson Design Training
In this professional development, DataWORKS consultants train teachers to write standards-based EDI lessons using their own instructional resources, specifically connecting instructional materials to California Common Core standards. In this professional development, teachers are trained in how to use the California Common Core Standards and their assessments focused on Smarter Balanced released questions. Training addresses types of questions (such as multiple response), shift to concept-based math questions, the emphasis on informational text, and new methods of assessing writing from sources.

Instructional Leadership
Training in Classroom Observations
In this professional development DataWORKS takes administrators and teacher leaders on instructional rounds. We visit 10 classrooms, spending 5 minutes in each class and 5 minutes between classes in the hallway analyzing what we are seeing. Our DataWORKS classroom observation form measures and monitors lesson design, lesson delivery, student engagement, Checking for Understanding, English Learner strategies, Cognitive Strategies (to help students remember), technology use (student and teacher), and Common Core “rigor.” The sessions include pre-briefing, observations, and “what did we learn today” debriefings. Originally designed for principals and academic coaches, teachers comment this is one of the best trainings they have done because they see what works.

StepUP Academy
DataWORKS created its StepUP Academy summer school program to accelerate English Learners by pre-teaching next year’s standards during the summer. This turn-key program has been used in California and across the United States. Recently, we ran an Algebra Academy during winter recess for middle school and high school students in Central California. With StepUP academies, DataWORKS provides all the teacher manuals and student workbooks. We provide whiteboards and markers for students and include a full-day of training for teachers. In addition, throughout the academy, we provide ongoing coaching. The StepUP Academy not only accelerates students, it also accelerates teachers who teach EDI for four hours per day for several weeks with coaching.

Pacing Calendars
DataWORKS creates pacing calendars for a school’s instructional materials. The final calendar is posted online for easy accessibility by the teachers. The calendars are designed to cover all the content standards during the year while including scheduled periodic review to improve student retention. We leave Fridays open as a buffer day to allow for teacher flexibility.

Curriculum Calibration
Teachers collect one week of student work for a few students and submit it to DataWORKS. DataWORKS analyzes the student assignments for alignment to the California Common Core Standards, breadth of coverage of the standards, and alignment to the SBAC assessment questions. Calibrators provide suggestions for modifying or enhancing lessons to meet the rigor of Smarter Balanced assessments. A DataWORKS trainer visits the school to make a presentation of the results.

Launch to Literacy
DataWORKS developed its Launch to Literacy beginning English Language Development (ELD) curriculum to supplement current ELA resources and help English Learners as well as all students learning to read for the first time.
Launch to Literacy includes eight modules per day: phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, listening & speaking, language, and writing. This adds up to more than 150 minutes of ELD instructional content per day. ELD teachers can use only the modules they need to fit their time allotment for ELD instruction.
